It’s fairly impractical, and some might say impossible, to function without a cell phone these days. However, the cost of a cell phone each month can be a major dilemma while trying to get out of debt. Comparing cell phone plans can help reduce the monthly expense without eliminating it. Here are some tips on finding the right cell phone plan for you.
Tips on Comparing Cell Phone Plans
When you need to reduce expenses to eliminate credit card debt, you may be hesitant to consider your cell phone. While some may indeed have to cut out the cost altogether, you might be able to simply reduce your bill. Comparing cell phone plans is the best way to start this process.
There are plenty of companies out there offering service plans. Check out these reviews to get started:
- Nerd Wallet Best Cell Phone Plans
- Consumer Reports Best Low-Cost Cell Phone Plans
- Google Fi Information
The links above are detailed reviews of plans offered by the major carriers by Nerd Wallet and Consumer Reports. There is also a link to Google Fi- Google’s coverage. It’s very reasonable and has lots of perks but goes unmentioned by the reviews. We use it in my household, so I wanted to include it (we do not live in a metro area and it works great with Wi-Fi).
Research what’s most important to you comparing cell phone plans. Be sure to ask friends, family and neighbors for their experiences too. While my husband uses Google-Fi, I am still on my parent’s family plan through Verizon. Yes, we do pay them for it! I like the coverage Verizon offers as well as the price being on the family plan. Don’t hesitate to use all your resources to get a great money saving deal- including pressuring your current carrier for a discount.
Additionally, there are several other considerations beyond the price and the amount of data you will pay for. Remember to think through:
- Cost of the phone
- Additional warranties
- Taxes
- Surcharges and activation fees
- Ability to get on a family plan
Cutting your bill by even $20 per month can help in your debt relief efforts. Over the course of a year, you could have an additional $240!
