January 10: National Cut Your Energy Costs Day

Many of us may have made financial New Year’s resolutions whether it be to save more, spend less, pay off debt, start an emergency fund, save for retirement, etc. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day 2013, January 10, is a great way to kick off saving on your energy bills to reach your financial goals.

Follow these credit counseling tips to save energy and money.

Follow these credit counseling tips to save energy and money.

To reduce your energy consumption, you do not have to make any huge life-altering changes. You just need to take some small measures that will save you big money in the future. All of these tips can help you stay on budget. For example:

  • It might go without saying, but be sure to turn off all lights when you leave a room.
  • Lower the thermostat when you are at work or are away for a long period of time.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it is full.
  • Turn off all devices that are not in use. Turn off the TV, computer, radio, etc. when you are not using it. If they have the option, also consider putting your devices in sleep mode.
  • Do not leave electronics endlessly charging. Unplug your laptop or phone charger once your device is done charging.  (This can also help the battery life of your device.)
  • Don’t let the water run. Turn off the water when you are not using it when brushing your teeth. Do not let the shower run for a long time before getting in it. Also, fix any leaky faucets.
  • Switch out old incandescent light bulbs for new energy-efficient, compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs).
  • Cook with smaller appliances if possible.

There are also many bigger steps you can take to reduce your energy consumption and cut your energy costs. Consider:

  • Install solar panels in your home.
  • Seal all cracks and openings to maintain insulation. Weatherproof the house by sealing all windows and doors.
  • Be sure when you purchase a new appliance that it is Energy Star rated.
  • If possible, walk or bike to work. Also, consider carpooling.

If you’re struggling to pay off debt, ACCC can help. Schedule a free credit counseling session with us today.
