Free Debt Advice

Whether you have too much debt already or you’re trying to avoid accumulating it before it becomes a problem, everyone needs money advice from time to time. Not everyone can afford to talk to pricey financial professionals, so where can people turn for free debt advice? While it can sometimes be challenging to weed out the bad financial advice from the legitimate advice, there are plenty of sources out there! We will explain where you can find free debt advice over the phone, online, and in person.

Free debt advice is a good start for paying off debt.

Free Debt Advice Over The Phone

Calling a credit counselor is a great way to get advice on how to pay off your debt and rebuild your credit! What exactly happens when you call a credit counselor? First, they ask you about your income, expenses, assets and liabilities. This helps them to get an understanding of your overall financial picture. From there, they can help you come up with a budget and a plan to pay off your debt. This may include enrolling you in a debt management plan or referrals to legal or social services. By the end of your phone call with a credit counselor, you should have received some valuable free debt advice!

Free Debt Advice Online

The internet is a wealth of free resources, including right here on Talking Cents! Our blog has tons of free advice about budgeting, improving credit, and paying off debt. We also have financial education materials on our main website, including budgeting templates, workbooks, and financial calculators.

If you spend a lot of time on social media, Twitter can be a great place to find financial advice too. Financial gurus are a dime a dozen on social media, but always be sure to do your own research too. Anyone can call themselves a personal finance blogger, so you’ll need to find reputable accounts. Banks, credit bureaus, and other credit counseling agencies will often post good financial advice. The credit bureau Experian hosts a Credit Chat on Twitter every Wednesday. In these chats, they discuss different financial topics with other industry experts.

Free Debt Advice in Person

If reading a blog post or talking to someone over the phone just seems too impersonal, we have in-person financial workshops that may be helpful. We host workshops about budgeting, credit, identity theft, and more! We offer financial education workshops to organizations and community groups in the New England area at no cost. To set up a workshop, contact our Education Department: 800-769-3571 x1980.

If you’re struggling to pay off debt, ACCC may be able to help. Sign up for a free credit counseling session with us today.
