How To Read Your Credit Report

Consumers need to pay attention to their credit reports, even if they do not have any debt. By going through your credit report, you can search for any red flags, such as incorrect information or credit inquiries that weren’t authorized.

ACCC offers advice on how to read credit reports:

1. Personal information

Confirm that all the personal information, including your name, address, social security number, and date of birth are accurate.

2. Credit history

Review thoroughly the credit history section! It includes credit card accounts, loan accounts, remaining loan balances, late payments, and any accounts that have been sent to collections.

2. Negative information

This section contains a list of accounts that have not been paid, as well as public records. If there is any inaccurate negative information listed, get this fixed immediately!

4. Credit inquiries

This lists every time someone has requested your credit report, both hard and soft inquiries. Hard inquiries can have a small negative impact on your credit score.

5. Follow up with any inaccuracies

Clear up any mistakes as soon as possible. Send the agency with the error a letter explaining the situation along with documents or proof of the mistake.
